Closing the Cybersecurity Workforce Skills Gap through Education Outreach

Fortinet’s Education Outreach & Veterans Programs work with global leaders to drive change on pressing cybersecurity issues, in working with economically challenged, under-served, and underrepresented groups and individuals to launch, up-skill and re-skill their careers in cybersecurity. The need for diversity and inclusion in developing a skilled workforce remains a priority for those in the cybersecurity industry, which is facing a global workforce skills gap of approximately 3.4 million people. Fortinet’s Education Outreach and Veterans Programs are focused on closing this as part of our Corporate Social Responsibility goals, with a focus on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. This is accomplished through cultivating global partnerships such as with Blacks in Technology Foundation, to drive a skilled, inclusive, and diverse cybersecurity workforce.

Early Career Development: Intentional Pathways to Elevate Black and Brown Tech Talent

Many companies have made commitments to DEI but something is missing because the needle isn't moving... The US IT workforce is still only 8% Black... We have to create more access and open doors for candidates who may lack a degree. I'm going to talk about equitable attraction and retention.

I'll talk about how to build intentional programs to attract and retain alternatively skilled talent. There are many bootcamps available to provide upskilling opportunities but the greater opportunity is to build a workforce upskilling solution with a light at the end of the tunnel... a job!

Hood to Hooded: The Power Over our Decisions

Key Deliverables: 1. Navigating a Career being Black 2. Finding Your Authentic Voice 3) The Power of Your Choices, 4) The Power of Mentors and Allies, 5) The Intersection of being Black  in America

Hood to Hooded is a powerful, memorable book that explores the unjust racial and gender bias in corporate America. It fills the growing desire for education and awareness that has sparked an increase in sales of books addressing these discriminatory issues in the United States.

In this keynote the story opens with the heart-wrenching recognition of a 5-year-old Black child who looks and feels different and, as such, begins to think differently. Her passion grows in the recognition that the fight for Black women’s equal pay must address race and gender biases that erode the Black woman’s dreams and the ability to thrive.

It evolves with a touching portrayal of black feminist thought…an aspiring Black woman who chooses to advocate for a unique group that exists within our society. It is where we find the intersectional processes of ethnicity, class, gender, and sexual orientation that shapes the future of young African American women through their individual and collective consciousness, self-confidence, and actions. As Hood to Hooded unfolds, Dr. Cooper is open and vulnerable about her struggles, fears, and the disappointments of a troubled life—and her ultimate response to them. Education and advocacy came in the form of bold new courage inspired by and through a mentoring program that can and will change the future.

American Award-winning journalist Cynthia Newsome noted, “This book provides insight into the Black woman’s experience that will help generations of women who follow.

The event will be opened to all who are interested in the book signing.

CONTENT WARNING: This keynote touches on drug addition and sexual assault. This content may be disturbing for those that have experienced trauma. A trigger may be something as simple as one word like “rape” or more complex, like a detailed description of a violent act.

Race After Technology: Abolitionist Tools for the New Jim Code

From everyday apps to complex algorithms, technology has the potential to hide, speed, and even deepen discrimination, while appearing neutral and even benevolent when compared to racist practices of a previous era. In this talk, Ruha presents the concept of the “New Jim Code" to explore a range of discriminatory designs that encode inequity: by explicitly amplifying racial hierarchies, by ignoring but thereby replicating social divisions, or by aiming to fix racial bias but ultimately doing quite the opposite. Ruha will help the audience consider how race itself is a kind of tool designed to stratify and sanctify social injustice and discuss how technology is and can be used toward liberatory ends. This presentation takes us into the world of biased bots, altruistic algorithms, and their many entanglements, and provides conceptual tools to decode tech promises with sociologically informed skepticism. In doing so, it challenges us to question not only the technologies we are sold, but also the ones we manufacture ourselves.

Leveraging AI for IT Career Development: Empowering IT Professionals with Tools that can be Force Multipliers

How the use of ChatGPT and related AI tools can enhance the career development of IT professionals by reducing toil, accelerating learning and expanding innovation. Remember, your intelligence is not artificial!

In today's fast-paced and rapidly evolving IT landscape, professionals face the constant challenge of staying ahead of emerging technologies and industry trends. The use of AI-powered tools, such as ChatGPT and its related counterparts, presents a transformative opportunity to enhance career development for IT professionals. This abstract highlights how leveraging these tools can effectively reduce toil, accelerate learning, and foster innovation, resulting in increased professional growth and success.

Reducing Toil: IT professionals often encounter repetitive and mundane tasks that consume valuable time and hinder productivity. With AI-powered chat tools, such as ChatGPT, they can offload routine inquiries and troubleshooting to automated systems. By leveraging natural language processing and machine learning capabilities, these tools provide efficient and accurate responses to common queries, freeing up professionals to focus on more complex and strategic aspects of their work. The reduction in toil allows IT professionals to allocate their time and energy towards higher-value activities, boosting overall productivity and job satisfaction.

Accelerating Learning: Continuous learning is crucial for IT professionals to keep up with the ever-evolving technological landscape. AI tools provide a vast repository of knowledge and resources, enabling IT professionals to access up-to-date information, tutorials, and best practices with ease. ChatGPT's ability to understand and generate human-like responses facilitates interactive and personalized learning experiences. Professionals can seek guidance, receive recommendations, and explore new technologies, helping them acquire knowledge at an accelerated pace. The accessibility and adaptability of these AI tools greatly support skill development and foster a culture of lifelong learning.

Expanding Innovation: Innovation lies at the heart of IT careers, and AI tools play a pivotal role in expanding the boundaries of creative problem-solving. By leveraging ChatGPT and related tools, IT professionals gain access to a diverse range of ideas, insights, and perspectives. These AI-powered platforms can generate innovative suggestions, facilitate brainstorming sessions, and assist in the exploration of novel solutions to complex challenges. The collaboration between humans and AI promotes a symbiotic relationship, fueling creativity, and inspiring breakthrough innovations. IT professionals can leverage these tools to prototype, experiment, and drive transformative changes within their organizations.

Conclusion: The integration of AI-powered tools, particularly ChatGPT and related counterparts, has the potential to revolutionize career development for IT professionals. By reducing toil, accelerating learning, and expanding innovation, these tools empower individuals to unleash their full potential and drive meaningful impact. As IT professionals embrace these AI tools, they can navigate the dynamic IT landscape with greater efficiency, stay at the forefront of emerging technologies, and lead the way in shaping the future of the industry.

Speech is Power: How Mastering Your Delivery Gets You Ahead

Building Bridges with Broadband: Closing the Digital Divide Through the BIL

Exploring the role of broadband in promoting equity and social justice is crucial as there is a call to action to bridge the digital divide in Black and Brown communities. It is imperative that we engage in conversations about revitalizing both urban and rural infrastructure to address this issue.

Did you know that over 30 million Americans lack access to affordable and reliable broadband, with Black and brown communities disproportionately impacted? The lack of broadband connectivity creates barriers to education, healthcare, and economic opportunity. However, the recent Bipartisan Infrastructure Law represents a pivotal moment for Black business owners. This law includes funding for broadband infrastructure, investment in research and development, and support for workforce development. It's time to explore the impact that broadband infrastructure can have in leveling the playing field and empowering underserved communities.
